If you’ve been thinking about getting out on the water, there’s no better time than May to experience fly fishing Biscayne Bay at its finest. I’m Capt. John, and this is the time of year when everything starts to come alive across the flats, shorelines, and backcountry waters.

May brings a perfect balance of warm water temperatures, consistent weather patterns, and an explosion of baitfish throughout the bay. These conditions create ideal opportunities for anglers looking to sight fish and target a variety of inshore species on the fly. The water clarity is often excellent this time of year, which makes spotting fish cruising the flats not only possible—but incredibly exciting.

One of the biggest highlights of fly fishing Biscayne Bay in May is the diversity of species you can encounter inshore. Bonefish are a top target, tailing in shallow water and offering one of the most rewarding challenges on a fly rod. Their speed and awareness make every successful presentation feel like a true accomplishment.
Permit also begin to show more consistently this time of year. Known for being one of the most technical fish to catch on fly, they often cruise the flats looking for crabs and small crustaceans. When conditions line up, May can provide some of the best shots at these prized fish.

Tarpon start becoming more active as well, especially along channels, basins, and transitional areas. Whether you’re targeting laid-up fish or intercepting them on the move, the opportunity to hook into a tarpon on fly gear is something every angler should experience at least once.

In addition to the “big three,” anglers can also expect to find snook, redfish, jacks, and even barracuda in the mix. These species are aggressive, fun on the fly, and help round out a full day on the water.

Another reason May stands out for fly fishing Biscayne Bay is the consistency. Weather windows are longer, winds are often more manageable in the mornings, and fish are actively feeding. This allows for more time on the bow, more shots at fish, and ultimately a better overall experience.

Whether you’re an experienced fly angler or stepping onto the bow for the first time, May offers some of the most productive and exciting fishing of the year here in Biscayne Bay. From stalking bonefish across the flats to lining up a cast on a cruising permit or rolling tarpon, every trip holds the potential for something unforgettable.

If you’re ready to experience fly fishing Biscayne Bay this May, I’d love to get you out on the water and show you what makes this fishery so special.
