Biscayne Bay Fishing Report

Fished this week with owners of a new company. Strike Footwear. The new official footwear of the IGFA. We were blessed with nice summer weather with light winds and blue skies. We got a bit of a later start due to them needing a coffee detour after making it to the ramp. We were lucky enough to have them bring along an amazing photographer Scott Kerrigan who would help out with fish pictures and content for there new adventure. When we arrived at the first spot to fish Steve the owner of Strike casted into a nice school of permit with about 50 fish in it. His crab landed at the tail end of the school floating in a green hole and he ended up catching a snapper. We caught a few other species of fish while we were waiting on the tide to drop. We then fished some tailing bonefish who were complete snobs and didn’t want to play. Later in the day Sandro got on the bow and we went to an area that has been holding lot of permit. After a handful of decent shots with the spinning rod he finally made a great long cast and landed in a big school of fish and caught a nice permit. A successful trip for the guys from Strike. They managed a nice permit and got lots of content for there new brand. Look forward to fishing with them again in the future.

Chasing Silver Ghosts: Fly Fishing for Permit in Biscayne Bay with Capt. John Long

The morning light breaks across Biscayne Bay as we pole silently along a remote flat. Captain John Long stands on the platform, his eyes scanning the crystal clear water with an intensity that comes from decades of hunting one of fly fishing's most elusive prizes. The boat drifts to a stop as his voice drops to a whisper: "Permit. Eleven o'clock. About 80 feet."

And there they are – the unmistakable sickle-shaped tails of feeding permit, nosing through the turtle grass in search of crabs. These are the moments permit anglers live for, and on Biscayne Bay fishing charters, these opportunities occur with a frequency found in few other destinations worldwide.

Biscayne Bay has earned its reputation as one of the premier permit fisheries in the United States. The vast network of shallow flats, channels, and basins creates the perfect habitat for permit to thrive year-round. From the iconic flats near Stiltsville to the productive waters surrounding Key Biscayne, Biscayne Bay fishing charters offer diverse permit opportunities that can accommodate various fishing conditions.

What sets Biscayne Bay apart is not just the number of permit but their size. The bay consistently produces fish in the 15-30 pound class, with specimens exceeding 40 pounds encountered regularly on Biscayne Bay fishing charters. These aren't just any permit – they're among the largest you'll find anywhere, providing both the ultimate challenge and the greatest reward.

If there's one guide who has become synonymous with Biscayne Bay permit, it's Captain John Long. Born and raised in South Florida, John has dedicated his Biscayne Bay fishing charters career to understanding these challenging gamefish. His knowledge extends beyond simply finding permit – it encompasses a deep understanding of their behavior, feeding patterns, and the subtle environmental factors that influence their movements.

"Permit fishing isn't just about spotting fish," John explains as he positions the skiff for an approaching school during one of his Biscayne Bay fishing charters. "It's about reading their mood, understanding how they're feeding, and then presenting a fly in a way that triggers an eat rather than spooking them. There's a rhythm to it that only comes with time on the water."

That time on the water has made John one of the most respected permit guides in Florida. His custom Chittum skiff, designed specifically for permit fishing, features a whisper-quiet hull, minimal draft, and a stable casting platform – all essential elements when pursuing these notoriously spooky fish.

Fly fishing for permit represents perhaps the ultimate challenge in shallow water angling. These fish possess extraordinary eyesight, acute sensitivity to pressure changes, and a selective feeding behavior that makes them maddeningly difficult to fool with artificial offerings.

A typical day on Biscayne Bay fishing charters with Captain John begins before sunrise. "The early morning provides several advantages," he notes while preparing leaders at the dock. "The wind is typically lighter, visibility is often better, and the fish haven't been pressured yet. When conditions are right, those first few hours can be magical."

The approach varies based on conditions and permit behavior. Some days involve poling extensive flats, looking for tailing fish or the distinctive "muds" that permit create when feeding on the bottom. Other days might focus on channel edges where permit stage during certain tide phases or around structure that holds crabs – their preferred forage.

Success requires much more than just finding fish. The angler must execute a accurate cast, often at distances exceeding 60 feet, with perfect presentation. The fly – typically a crab or shrimp pattern – must land softly, at precisely the right distance and angle to the fish, and then be retrieved in a manner that triggers the permit's predatory instinct without spooking it.

When everything comes together – when the permit tracks the fly, tips down, and eats – the resulting battle tests both tackle and angler. These powerful fish make blistering runs that can expose any weakness in technique or equipment. Landing a permit on fly is an achievement that relatively few anglers ever experience.

What makes Biscayne Bay fishing charters particularly special for permit fishing is the consistency throughout the year. While spring and early summer typically offer prime conditions, with large permit gathering for spawning activities, the bay's resident population provides year-round opportunities.

"We have seasonal patterns that influence where and how we target permit," John explains while running his Biscayne Bay fishing charters, "but the beauty of Biscayne Bay is that I can find fishable permit any month of the year. The approach might change, but the opportunity is always there."

This consistency extends to fishing conditions as well. The bay's protected waters offer multiple options regardless of wind direction or strength. When ocean-side flats become too rough, the western shorelines often remain fishable. This flexibility allows for productive permit fishing even when conditions aren't perfect.

For anglers booking a permit-focused trip on Biscayne Bay fishing charters with Captain John, the experience extends far beyond just fishing. It's an education in reading water, understanding tides, and developing the patience required for this specialized pursuit.

"I want my clients to understand what we're seeing and why we're approaching each situation a certain way," John says during his Biscayne Bay fishing charters as he points out subtle changes in water color that indicate a deeper pothole – a prime permit feeding area. "Even if we don't land a permit, understanding the process makes you a better angler."

Most days begin with a discussion of conditions and expectations. Permit fishing demands realistic goals; even with an expert guide, success is never guaranteed. John emphasizes that the pursuit itself – the stalking, the casting, the occasional follows and refusals – constitutes much of the experience's value.

For those willing to embrace this mindset, the rewards are substantial. When a permit finally does eat the fly, the culmination of effort, skill, and knowledge creates a fishing memory unmatched in intensity. Landing a permit on Biscayne Bay fishing charters represents an achievement in the fly fishing world that few can claim.

For anglers interested in experiencing permit fishing on Biscayne Bay fishing charters with Captain John Long, advance planning is essential. His reputation and success rate make his calendar fill quickly, particularly during prime spring and summer months when permit activity peaks.

The ideal trip involves multiple days on the water. This approach accounts for weather variables and increases the likelihood of encountering optimal conditions. It also allows anglers to apply lessons learned each day, improving their chances of success as the trip progresses.

Preparation extends to equipment as well. While John provides all necessary tackle on his Biscayne Bay fishing charters, anglers bringing their own gear should focus on 9-10 weight fly rods, reels with smooth drags capable of handling 200+ yards of backing, and floating lines designed for tropical conditions. Leaders typically range from 10-16 feet, with 16-20 pound fluorocarbon tippets.
Equally important is practice. Permit fishing rewards those who can deliver accurate casts under pressure. Time spent improving casting skills before the trip pays dividends when that trophy permit appears within range.

As our day on Biscayne Bay fishing charters concludes with a perfect sunset over the Miami skyline, Captain John reflects on what draws him to permit fishing day after day, year after year. "It's the perfect combination of challenge and reward," he says while poling us back toward the marina. "These fish demand everything from you – focus, skill, patience, adaptability – but when it all comes together, there's nothing else in fishing that compares."

For those seeking the ultimate fly fishing challenge in one of the world's most beautiful settings, Biscayne Bay's permit and Captain John Long's Biscayne Bay fishing charters create an experience that defines bucket-list angling. Whether you're a permit veteran or pursuing your first on fly, these waters and this guide offer the opportunity to connect with one of saltwater's most revered gamefish.

When the spring breezes begin to stir the crystal waters of Biscayne Bay, something magical happens beneath the surface. The flats come alive as permit tail on shallow banks, bonefish schools materialize like ghosts over white sand, and the first waves of migrating tarpon roll lazily in the channels. For anglers seeking the ultimate shallow water experience, spring Biscayne Bay fishing charters represent the pinnacle of flats fishing opportunity.

As a native son of these waters, I've watched the seasonal rhythms of Biscayne Bay unfold for decades. My name is Captain John Long of Biscayne Bay Fishing Charters, and I'd like to share what makes spring in this pristine ecosystem so extraordinary for anglers booking Biscayne Bay fishing charters to chase the coveted "grand slam" species.

Perhaps no event generates more excitement among serious flats anglers than the spring permit migration. Beginning in March and peaking through May, permit gather in impressive numbers around Biscayne Bay's outer flats and channel edges for their annual spawning ritual. Biscayne Bay fishing charters during this period offer the best chances to connect with what many consider the ultimate shallow water challenge.

These notoriously selective gamefish become slightly more aggressive during this period, creating prime opportunities to connect with what many consider the ultimate shallow water challenge. From the expansive flats near Stiltsville to the productive banks along Key Biscayne, we find permit both as singles and in schools, often tailing aggressively as they root for crabs in the turtle grass.

The spring winds that sometimes challenge anglers actually benefit permit fishing, as these conditions tend to push more natural forage onto the flats. With my custom Chittum skiff's superior tracking ability and minimal draft, our Biscayne Bay fishing charters can effectively pole into position even on breezy days, putting you within casting range of these magnificent fish.

While bonefish never completely leave Biscayne Bay, their numbers and activity levels surge dramatically during spring months. As water temperatures stabilize in the mid-70s to low 80s, bonefish become more predictable in their movements and more aggressive in their feeding, making spring Biscayne Bay fishing charters particularly productive for targeting these elusive speedsters.

Spring brings some of the year's lowest tides, exposing vast expanses of shallow flats where we can sight-fish for cruising bones. These conditions create the perfect scenario for spotting the telltale nervous water and subtle pushes that reveal a bonefish's presence.

What makes spring bonefish particularly special on Biscayne Bay fishing charters is their quality. While we might see fewer fish than in places like the Bahamas, Biscayne Bay consistently produces trophy-class bonefish in the 8-10 pound range, with occasional giants exceeding 12 pounds. These aren't just any bonefish—they represent some of the largest specimens available anywhere in the world.

By late April into May, the main event begins as migratory tarpon flood into Biscayne Bay's channels and basins. These magnificent gamefish, often weighing 80-150 pounds, create perhaps the most visual and explosive fishing experience available in shallow water.

The beauty of spring tarpon fishing in Biscayne Bay lies in the diversity of opportunities. On calm mornings, we can pole the oceanside flats and intercept strings of tarpon as they swim predictable travel routes. When conditions are less favorable, we can target laid-up fish in protected basins or ambush them as they funnel through the bay's numerous channels.

For fly anglers on Biscayne Bay fishing charters, there's nothing quite like watching a 100-pound tarpon track your fly, roll on it, and then launch skyward in a series of gill-rattling jumps. For those preferring conventional tackle, the power of these prehistoric gamefish will test both your equipment and your fighting technique.

What makes Biscayne Bay such a productive spring fishery is its extraordinary habitat diversity. Within a single day, we can fish crystal clear flats, lush seagrass beds, mangrove shorelines, deep channels, and expansive basins—each environment holding different species or presenting different opportunities to encounter our target fish.

The bay's protected status within Biscayne National Park helps preserve water quality and habitat integrity, creating a healthy ecosystem where gamefish thrive. The network of channels, flats, and basins creates natural funnels and feeding stations that concentrate fish, making them more accessible to anglers.

Having grown up exploring these waters, I bring to every Biscayne Bay fishing charter an intimate understanding of the bay's seasonal patterns and hidden hotspots. My knowledge extends beyond simply finding fish—it includes understanding the subtle interplay between tides, winds, water temperature, and fish behavior that determines success on any given day.

My custom Chittum skiff represents the pinnacle of technical poling skiff design, offering unmatched stability, silence, and the ability to access the skinniest water where the largest fish often feed undisturbed. This specialized vessel, combined with top-quality tackle and decades of experience, creates the optimal platform for pursuing trophy flats species.

Spring trips book quickly, particularly during the prime weeks of April and May when all three species are available in good numbers. For anglers serious about connecting with trophy permit, bonefish, or tarpon, I recommend booking well in advance and planning for multiple days to account for weather variables.

While accomplishing a true grand slam (catching all three species in a single day) remains challenging even in perfect conditions, spring offers the best mathematical probability of achieving this feat. More importantly, it provides consistent opportunities to target whichever species is showing best on a given day.

A day on Biscayne Bay offers more than just world-class fishing. The bay's breathtaking beauty, with its azure waters and Miami skyline backdrop, creates a stunning visual environment. Wildlife encounters abound, from manatees and dolphins to ospreys and frigate birds. Even on slower fishing days, the natural splendor of this unique ecosystem provides a memorable experience.

As Biscayne Bay enters its prime spring season, availability becomes increasingly limited. For anglers seeking the ultimate flats fishing experience—whether you're hunting your first permit, looking to test your skills against trophy bonefish, or hoping to tangle with the mighty silver king—spring in Biscayne Bay delivers opportunities found in few other places on Earth.

Contact Biscayne Bay Fishing Charters today to secure your dates and experience the spring grand slam fishery that serious anglers dream about all year. Whether you're an accomplished fly fisher or prefer conventional tackle, our Biscayne Bay fishing charters are customized to match your skill level and target species preferences.

Together, we'll chase the ghosts of the flats, the silver kings of the channels, and perhaps the most challenging gamefish of all—the permit—during the most productive season of the year.
